The Finnish Lapphund combines the physical characteristics of a typical Northern dog with the temperament and personality of a herder. Origin It is believed that Finnish Lapphunds were created by the Sami, an indigenous group of people that still reside in areas divided between Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia.

Finnish Lapphunds were the original reindeer herders of the Sami people, the indigenous population of the area between Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia. Despite their historic origins, they weren't officially recognized by kennel clubs until the late 1940s, right after the Second World War. Their breed standard was redefined in the 1960s.
